Well here it is,the World Cup is almost upon us, and with the exception of Ibra and Bale the best players in the world will all be on show for what promises to be a great month of football.
Now, I’m not sure about you but I’ve been looking at the teams and thinking how am I going to get Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar up front without having to put the entire Iranian midfield in my team.
With that bleak concept in mind I have put together my top 10 players that could be worth a look this summer, these players will hopefully give you the opportunity to get those extra points from your team whilst allowing you to get the big guns in. I have chosen only one from each country so I have had to be quite tight on my choices, others that could have made it were, Dzagoev, Pjanic, Dejagah and Mitroglou, amongst others, but I didn’t want to overload.
10 – Hiroshi Kiyotake – Japan – 4.7m – MID
This guy might not be the household name that Honda or Kagawa are, but he is every bit as good if not better, he has had fantastic season for Nuremberg scoring three 3 goals and assisting 8 times, this might not seem a great return, but he has the 3rd highest key passes in the German league and playing for mid table side that is no mean feat. If Japan do squeeze out of there group he will have had a lot to do with it.
9 – Josip Drmic – Switzerland – 6.3m – FWD
Drmic is a machine for both club and country, he is the man that has scored just under 40% of Nuremberg’s goals this season and he is also as prolific for the Swiss. With 20 goals and 3 assists in 37 games this year for club and country he is surely looking for the World Cup to give him that big money move. If the Swiss perform well and get out of the group he will get it.
8 – Vincent Aboubaker – Cameroon – 6.1m – FWD
A very direct striker, in the typical African mould of player big, strong and very hard to stop. Cameroon have a tough group to get out of and he could be the man to do it. 16 goals and 8 assists this season for Lorient suggest this guy can make it on the big stage but a lot will depend on the teams form behind him and his partnership with Eto’o.
7 – Heung – Min Son – South Korea – 5.3. – MID
This could be a real bargain, listed as Mid on FiT but plays in a very attacking role for Korea, put this is shown in his 4 goals and 1 assist in his last 7 games for his national side. He has also had a good first season at Leverkusen scoring 10 goals and creating another 4 in his 30 appearances.
6 – Christian Atsu – Ghana – 5.2m – Mid
Very quick and agile winger who has the potential to light up Group f, he has played regularly this year after going on loan from Chelsea to Vitesse and this have given him the confidence to be a lot more expressive in his play. If he can bring this in to his national team he could be a real gem this World Cup.
5 -Saiid Salihovic – Bosnia – 5m – MID
This is a risky choice as he has a liking for a card or 2. But nevertheless he is a dead ball specialist that when the need occurs could come up with that piece of magic that might unlock a tight defence, he has good understanding with Dzeko and that could be crucial to Bosnia’s chances.
4 – Oribe Peralta – Mexico – 7.8m -FWD
A man bang in form and plays his club football in South America which means he will be rearing to go come June. 9 goals in his last 6 games for Mexico suggest that he is ready for action and his 14 in 24 for Santos this year gives him 23 goals in 30 games. He also has 4 assists.
3 – Alessio Cerci – Italy – 7.5 – FWD
More of a midfielder than out and out striker, he will play just off the front player/s but has had an amazing season for Torino with 13 goals and 11 assists to his name. I expect him to be Italy’s key to success this year, a far more cost effective option than Ballotelli and also you can trust Cerci.
2 -Daley Blind – Holland – 5.3 – DEF
The only defender in my line up, and he gets high on the list as LVG likes to play him in a central midfield role, I fancy the Dutch to do well this year and he will be an integral part of the team. A couple of clean sheets and a few assists might make him one of the best Defenders on FiT this year
1 – Juan Cuadrado – Colombia – 5.3 – Mid
I expect Colombia to be the “surprise” team of this years World Cup and this beast will the man that gets them there. He is an instant impact type of footballer and is so lethal going forward that he has been tried in a wide forward role for Fiorentina. He was the main man in their great season with 15 goals and 9 assists. If he plays to half of his ability then come July there could be a massive tug of war for this guy.
Take what I suggest with a pinch of salt, this is a World Cup after all and anything can happen, but I do believe that these guys will all make a name for themselves this year and if any of them can help you in your team selection and money saving then I hope I have helped.
Good a luck in the World Cup and let’s all party Brazilian style.
