1. Kasper Schmeichel
It would be easy to include the Denmark international in this list purely for his name (and his face), but the truth is Kasper Schmeichel was the best goalkeeper in the Championship last season. Voted in the 2013/14 PFA Team of the Year, the son of Manchester United legend Rudoph (sorry, Peter…) will be hoping to establish himself as a Premier League regular.
2. Kieran Trippier
Growing up as a youth player at Manchester City must be like walking up a mountain made of treacle, but two years after leaving the Etihad stadium Kieran Trippier is back in the Premier League with new boys Burnley. Fleet of foot and deadly from free-kicks, Trippier is a certain starter in the Clarets defence.
3. Jeffrey Schlupp
Listed as a defender, P-Diddy lookalike Schlupp is equally comfortable playing upfront, and is often utilised there in the latter stages of games. The perfect example of a goalscoring defender.
4. Jason Shackell
Burnley finished the 2013/14 Championship season with 18 clean sheets, much owing to the form of their imperious skipper Jason Shackell (cue ‘Jason Shackells strikers’ puns). The former Norwich City man played all 46 league games last term, making him a sure-fire starter come 18 August.
5. Wes Morgan
Also leading from the back is Leicester City captain Wes Morgan. The former Nottingham Forest defender-cum-brick-wall will not plan on giving Premier League strikers an easy ride.
6. Joey Barton
If you’ve never heard of Joey Barton then you’ve obviously been living on the moon. The controversial scouser is back in the Premier League and will be aiming to prove his large army of doubters wrong. As long as he avoids abusing minor celebrities on twitter he may just stand a chance.
7. Junior Hoilett
Former Blackburn winger Hoilett will be hoping to firmly establish himself as the best ever Canadian to grace the Premier League when QPR kick off their campaign against Hull City on 16 August. Granted, he only faces competition from Paul Peschisolido, Tomasz Radzinski and Paul Stalteri, but it’s an accolade nevertheless.
8. Riyad Mahrez
Many people won’t have heard of Leicester’s tricky winger Riyad Mahrez, but he’s actually the only player on this list to have featured at the 2014 World Cup. French by birth, Mahrez played 74 minutes of Algeria’s 2-1 defeat to Belgium.
9. Charlie Austin
Austin, hilariously nicknamed ‘Chazza’ by his teammates, has scored an incredible 199 goals in 315 senior appearances. Granted, 64 of these were in non league football, but still a credible record.
10. Danny Ings
He once kissed a disabled fan on the head and handed him a pair of boots, and for that reason alone Danny Ings has made this list. Oh, and the fact he slapped in 21 league goals last term…
11. Anthony Knockaert
Most famous for missing a penalty in a 2012/13 playoff semi-final at Watford, the French midfielder could be the joker up Leicester’s sleeve this campsign. With a good season behind him, Anthony could be Knocking on Didier Deschamps’ door come next summer.
Gliff, the app for football fans to ‘caption the moment’ has been launched ready for the new football season by the team behind the Buzzfeed for sport, TheGliff.com.
Gliff takes the current trend of having conversations with images to let football fans, express rants, raves, praise and trolling of the footballing universe – creating something similar to a meme-led fan forum.
If a fan doesn’t want their true identity be revealed (like all forums allow) they are automatically assigned their own Ultimate Footballer Name (a mashup of first and last names from a greatest footballer list the team compiled).
Fans can either create their own images or take them from an extensive library of footy related images leaving it up to them to decide which image makes their message more interesting
