Well we did it. There’s one game left and if like me you can’t move up nor down in your league then this will feel pretty futile. My picks in the last few weeks though have been alarmingly decent. It’s almost as if I’m performing well as the Summer approaches in the hope of a new contract or a big move. I’m the Sadio Mane of FPL blogging.
@CraigHazell
DEFENDER: Hector Bellerin, Arsenal
In defence, with no games to plan ahead for, it seems worthwhile to pick what seems to be a banker of a clean sheet. So it is old faithful Hector Bellerin as Arsenal take on Villa. Villa got a 0-0 draw with relegated Newcastle last week and it was deemed an excellent result. A game they couldn’t even score in against the second worst team in the league. A good result. Surely Arsenal don’t concede, right?
MIDFIELDER: Dusan Tadic, Southampton
Southampton are the other team that catch the eye in this final gameweek. An impressive win against Spurs shows that they haven’t given up this season and Dusan Tadic has clocked up an incredible 35 points in his last 3 weeks, making him the form midfielder in the game. Their opponents Palace, have two games left this season and only one they care about. Big clue. It isn’t this one. Tadic is a natural provider and could lay it on a plate for this guy…
FORWARD: Shane Long, Southampton
Shane Long. He’s played the full 90 in his last 4 games (no mean feat for a striker) and got 2 goals in the process. Graziano Pelle’s decreasing involvement indicates maybe something else is going on with the window approaching or perhaps he has a deal with L’oreal on the horizon. Again, Palace aren’t the most motivated of opponents, with the exception of the likes of Dwight Gayle playing for a final spot, I just can’t see Saints losing this one.
CAPTAIN: Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal
Just to make it an Arsenal/Southampton sandwich, I’m going to pick Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal have outdone themselves this year and look to win the 3rd place cup rather than the 4th place plate. However they still have eyes on the 2nd place trophy which also gives them the ‘Above Spurs’ shield. All these honours exist solely within the imaginations of Arsenal fans and I for one look forward to half/half scarves and youtube raps that this bunch of intolerable morons will put together if Arsenal live the impossible dream. Sanchez looks a good pick for the ‘Defeating Aston Villa Award’.
OUTSIDER: Heung-Min Son, Tottenham
On the other side of North London, Spurs really do have something to play for. 2nd place will be a huge leap for Pocchetino and with a game against a demoralised Newcastle you would expect them to win. In Dele Alli’s absence, Son has started Spurs’ last couple games and while he only has 4 league goals all season, 2 of them have been in those last 2. The management clearly want him around and are insistent he won’t be a flop. He’s only 0.2% for a reason you could argue but he will start in a front 3 against truly awful opposition. It is worth a punt if you want one last tilt at beating Terry from Accounting who claims he doesn’t even look at his team even though you know he uses his free transfer every single week the lying fat prick.
