The Gameweek 30+ Preview
Written by @NiallHawthorne
It’s mid-June and I’m writing a FPL preview ahead of GW30+
Yep.. you read that correctly.
I had already written a preview for GW30, way back in early March. However as much as I want to just use that again, this is now GW30+ and that ‘+’ symbol carries an incredible amount of weight.
(ED: You can actually read the old GW30 Preview once you finish the GW30+ Preview – Here)
‘+’ means empty stadiums.
‘+’ means every match shown live.
‘+’ means live football on British TV at 3pm on a Saturday
‘+’ means unlimited transfers ahead of this GW
So, it’s time to write about GW30+. Let’s try and put some order into this insanity.
GW30+ Defender: George Baldock, Sheffield United
A double GW for the Blades against what were previously ‘modestly blessed’ attacking teams (that’s polite talk for rubbish), in Aston Villa and Newcastle Utd. I know most of you are screaming LORD LUNDSTRAM at your screen right now, but let me remind you that Lord Lundstram was less Lord and more Lackey before the world stopped turning.
Of course, you could plump for Lundstram and it may pay off handsomely, but I’m backing Baldock with 12% ownership, 2 goals, 4 assists and 10 clean sheets. He’s almost a differential!
For me the only big question is have the Blades lost their momentum? Will second season syndrome kick in before the end of their first ‘surprise’ season? Results against Villa and Newcastle will give us a pretty fair idea.
GW30+ Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City
The common perception is that KDB had started to run out of steam in FPL terms as Liverpool raced off into the distance and it became clear that the league title was gone. Let me tell you something about perception. It makes you believe things that aren’t real. For example – “Manchester City have 198 points in the last two seasons, they’re perceived to be an unstoppable juggernaut. Liverpool have had their once in a lifetime season, they can’t keep up the pace.”
Yeah….
Twice in the last 9 GW’s KDB brought in 14 points. He also bagged a 7 and 9-point haul. He’s now rested, and City will be looking to play themselves into some form ahead of the potential relaunch of the Champions League. De Bruyne tore Arsenal apart at The Emirates earlier in the season, and I can’t see any reason why he won’t repeat the trick on Wednesday, before doing unspeakably filthy things to Sean Dyche the following Monday.
GW30+ Forward: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal
What do you do when the second highest scoring forward in FPL this season has a double GW? Yep, you play him. An impressive 17 goals and 3 assists so far makes him a must-have.
But…there are rumours swirling that he’s going to be on his bike. So, is he playing to attract attention? Unlikely, as it’s unnecessary. So, is he playing to avoid injury which could potentially scupper a move? Hmmmm.
Or is he playing like a committed professional determined to push Arsenal up the table and towards the European places? Who cares? He’s got Brighton after City. Ding Dong!
GW30+ Captain: Sergio Aguero, Manchester City
The greatest modern striker of his era, fully rested with a double home GW ahead of him. Will we ever have an opportunity like this again? Probably not. He’s a 100%, cast-iron, nailed-on captain.
Pep will probably bring him off the bench in the 90th minute of both games, mind.
GW30+ Outsider: John McGinn, Aston Villa
Players who had previously written off the remainder of the 19/20 season are now back in the game. Kane will lead the Spurs line once more. Leroy Sane could be fit and raring to go (with Bayern Munich screaming at him to sit the hell down).
Aston Villa are scrapping for their lives, and their early season talisman is now back to team up with their mid-season talisman to try and drag them to safety. John McGinn racked up 3 goals and 2 assists in the first seven GW’s, and now he’s back for the last nine. 3.1% ownership. Your call.
GW30+ Draft: Leroy Sane, Manchester City
Sure, why not?
